Etsy works like a search engine that constantly evaluates your Listing Quality Score. While your shop was on pause, your competitors were accumulating clicks and sales, whereas your metrics “froze,” causing the system to show your products less frequently.
In this article, I, Yana Vertkova, Head of Etsy at the Goal Marketing Agency, with 5+ years of experience in marketplace promotion, will explain what needs to be done to restore traffic and bring back active sales to your Etsy shop after a suspension or a pause.
Why did my Etsy shop lose traffic?
This is one of the most common questions shop owners ask during my consultations. While there can be many reasons, traffic usually drops due to the following situations:
- Shop Suspension. If Etsy temporarily suspended your account due to policy violations or suspicious activity, the algorithm won’t “return” you to your previous positions immediately after reinstatement. The shop essentially restarts with a lower level of trust from the platform.
- Vacation Mode. During vacation mode, listings are not indexed and receive no clicks. The algorithm perceives your absence as a decrease in relevance—competitors overtake you in search results during this time.
- Incorrect Listing Updates. Bulk changes to titles, tags, or descriptions without a strategy can wipe out a listing’s accumulated quality score. The system treats such listings as “new” and tests them from scratch.
- Shop Inactivity for Over 3 Months. The Etsy algorithm is built on stability. Shops that have been “silent” for more than a quarter require systematic recovery work.
In the first two cases, you can follow these 6 steps to “resuscitate” your Etsy shop. The third and fourth points should be handled individually, as results depend on the niche, competition, and listing status.
Step 1: Manual Renew for Bestsellers
The first thing to do is signal the system that you are back. Select 5–10 of your most popular items (bestsellers) and perform a Manual Renew in your dashboard. This provides a temporary boost in search results, enough to gain initial views.
Important: At this stage, do not change descriptions, titles, or tags. Any interference with SEO will “reset” the accumulated LQS statistics. You only need the temporary search boost provided by the Renew button to get initial organic clicks.
Step 2: Launch Etsy Ads
Turn on Etsy Ads with a minimum budget ($1–2 per day). The main goal here isn’t immediate profit, but a “signal” to the algorithm. If the budget gets spent, it’s a good sign that the system is ready to show your items; if not, your SEO needs work.
Step 3: Listing Sorting (Categories A, B, C)
Divide your products into three categories:
- Category A (Bestsellers): Do not touch them; only use Renew to avoid resetting stats.
- Categories B and C (Average and New products): Here, you should update titles and Etsy tags, adding relevant seasonal keywords. Updated Etsy SEO shows the system that the content is fresh.
Step 4: Inventory Management
Add several new listings immediately after reopening. New arrivals receive an automatic “boost” from the platform, which helps pull up the overall Etsy promotion for the entire shop.
Step 5: How to Restore Listing Quality Score?
Sales are the fastest way to restore LQS. To trigger them, run a Sale (15–20%).
Run short “flash” discounts for 2 days. Why? Because this duration triggers a countdown timer in the buyer’s interface, creating a sense of urgency and encouraging quick orders.
Case Study Example: We used this exact approach for a clothing and accessories shop, combining discounts with SEO updates for Category B and C listings.
Result: The number of shop visits increased by 5101% compared to the same period last year. Favorites (from 154 to 417 per month) and abandoned carts also grew significantly, indicating increased audience interest.

Step 6: External Traffic via Pinterest
Use Pinterest for Etsy to drive additional visitors. Pinterest is an ideal tool for this. Create a pin with a link to your listing. The main advantage is the long-term effect: a high-quality pin can bring in buyers for weeks after posting, balancing your analytics without extra ad spend.
I recommend watching the video on the YouTube channel of Dmytro Mashtalir — a mentor and co-owner of the e-commerce growth studio Goal — which explains in detail how to revive an Etsy shop after it has been suspended or following an extended hiatus.
How long will it take to fully restore Etsy shop traffic?
There is no single answer—it depends on the reason for the pause, niche competition, and how systematically you approach recovery. However, a general benchmark is that you should see a range of changes in your metrics within the first 3 weeks. This is a sign that the algorithm is noticing your shop again.
If there is no progress after three weeks of active work, it’s a signal for a deeper audit: check SEO, content, pricing strategy, and the competitive landscape.
After your shop is reinstated, it’s important to stay active every day: respond to messages, update listings, and monitor analytics. Consistent activity is one of the key signals for Etsy’s algorithm.
